John Torrio (February 1882-April 16, 1957)
John Torrio was the boss of American gangsters during the prohibition era. Various activities which benefited Torrio's economic value were running brothels, bootlegging, and gambling. He was the boss of prominent and successful such as the likes of Al Capone who managed one of Torrio's many brothels. After being harmed by a rival gang, Torrio was arrested and sent to jail for nine months for running a brewery. After release, Torrio surrendered his institutions to Capone and went to live in Italy. Torrio returned to the United States becoming successful in real estate and bootlegging. Once again, he was arrested but this time for tax evasion. Once released, Torrio again retired and later died on April 16, 1957 of a heart attack. |
